Where do I start?

While our shelter welcomes all visitors, we recommend making an appointment before you plan to adopt a cat or dog so that we can ensure a knowledgeable caretaker will be available to answer your pet-specific questions.

What are the requirements to adopt a cat?

Please complete our cat adoption survey so we can ensure your chosen cat will be a good fit for your expectations and environment.

If you rent your home, we require approval from your landlord before you can adopt a cat.

Will you hold a cat for me if I cannot adopt right away?

We do not hold cats for anyone at this time. Adoption of a cat is on a first-come first-serve basis.

Why isn’t adoption less expensive?

Your pet will only be available for adoption after receiving flea, tick, & ear mite treatment ($25), deworming ($30), rabies vaccine ($22), spay/neuter ($100-$200), feline leukemia and feline immunodeficiency virus test ($40+), microchip and chip ID tag ($56).

Do you have any discounted adoption fees? Yes!

All cats over the age of 6 adopted by people over the age of 60 are FREE through our “Silver Whiskers Program!”

All cats who have been in our shelter for more than 100 days can be adopted in 2024 for only $10!

Are all of your adopted animals spayed and neutered? Yes!

Our mandate at HSYC is to reduce the number of unwanted animals in our community and ensuring all our adoptable animals are spayed or neutered is essential to that mandate.

What if the kitten I want to adopt is too small to be spayed or neutered?

All kittens too small to be spayed or neutered are available for placement in homes through our “Foster to Adopt Program.” You must be within 45 minutes from the shelter in order to qualify for this program as we will continue to be responsible for the kitten while it is in your care and we must be able to get to the kitten quickly in an emergency.

When the kitten is large enough to be spayed or neutered, HSYC will bear the cost of that proceedure and will finalize the adoption after your kitten recovers from the spay or neuter surgery. Adoption fees will be the same as the traditional adoption process and collected at that time.

I found a stray I would love to adopt, but I can’t afford all the medical treatments. Can you help me? Yes!

Our “Stray to Stay Program” enables you to foster your stray cat or kitten while we provide the same medical services we provide to animals in our care. After your cat or kitten is spayed or neutered, you need only pay the regular adoption fee we would have charged had your pet been in our care.
